Basic DIY safety checklist before starting
A calm checklist for tools, materials, surroundings and limits before a job begins.
The Importance of Preparing for Safety
Before you pick up a tool, taking a few minutes to assess the environment and prepare your safety gear can prevent serious injuries. A calm, methodical approach is the hallmark of a successful DIY project.
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Eye Protection: Safety glasses or goggles are mandatory whenever you are cutting, drilling, sanding, or using striking tools. Splinters, metal shavings, and dust can easily cause permanent eye damage.
- Dust Masks: Protect your lungs from fine particles. A basic dust mask is suitable for sweeping, but an FFP2 or FFP3 respirator is necessary when sanding MDF, cutting masonry, or working with fiberglass.
- Hearing Protection: Ear defenders or earplugs should be worn when operating loud power tools like circular saws, routers, or hammer drills for extended periods.
- Footwear: Avoid wearing sandals or open-toed shoes in a workshop or when handling heavy materials. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are a minimum requirement.
2. Environment and Surroundings
- Clear the Workspace: Ensure your working area is free of tripping hazards like trailing cables, offcuts of wood, or slippery spills.
- Lighting and Ventilation: Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see your cut lines and tool placements. If you are using strong adhesives, paints, or solvents, open windows to ensure adequate ventilation.
- Isolate the Power/Water: If working near plumbing or electrical fixtures, ensure the mains water or electricity is turned off and securely isolated before beginning.
3. Tool Safety Checks
- Inspect Cables: Check power tool cords for nicks or exposed wires. Do not use tools with damaged cords.
- Sharpness: Ensure blades and drill bits are sharp. A dull tool requires more force to use, increasing the likelihood of slipping and causing an injury.
- Proper Usage: Never remove the safety guards from saws or grinders. Ensure you are using the correct tool for the job.
4. Knowing Your Limits (When to Call a Professional)
Some jobs are not suitable for general DIY and carry significant legal and safety risks if performed incorrectly.
- Gas Work: Never attempt to modify or repair gas pipes or appliances. This requires a certified professional.
- Live Electrical Work: Changing a light fixture on an isolated circuit is generally acceptable for competent DIYers, but modifying the main consumer unit or running new circuits requires professional certification.
- Structural Changes: Do not remove walls or cut roof trusses without consulting a structural engineer.
Final Pre-Start Checklist
- Do I have the right PPE for the materials I’m working with?
- Is the area clear of hazards and well-lit?
- Are my tools in good condition?
- Do I know exactly what is behind the wall/floor I am about to cut or drill into?
- Am I feeling alert and focused? (Never do DIY when tired or rushed.)
