Why wood splits and how to reduce it

The Two Main Causes of Splitting

Wood splitting is incredibly frustrating, especially when it happens at the final stage of a project. Splitting generally happens for two reasons: mechanical force (driving screws or nails) or moisture changes (drying out).

1. Mechanical Force (The Wedge Effect)

Wood is composed of long, parallel fibres. When you drive a screw or a nail into a piece of wood without preparation, the fastener acts exactly like a splitting wedge used for firewood. It forces the fibres apart.

  • The Danger Zone: This wedge effect is most destructive when you drive a screw near the very end or edge of a board. Without a solid mass of wood surrounding the screw to absorb the pressure, the fibres simply pop apart.

How to Prevent It:

  • Always Drill a Pilot Hole: A pilot hole removes the material that the core of the screw would otherwise displace. The ideal pilot hole is the same diameter as the solid inner core of the screw, leaving the outer threads free to cut into the wood.
  • Blunt Your Nails: If you must use nails near an edge, turn the nail upside down and tap the sharp point with your hammer to blunt it. A blunt nail punches through the wood fibres, severing them, whereas a sharp nail slips between them and wedges them apart.

2. Moisture Changes (End Checking)

Wood expands when it absorbs moisture and shrinks when it dries out.

  • Because moisture escapes from the exposed end grain much faster than from the face of the board, the ends of the board shrink faster than the middle.
  • This uneven shrinking creates immense internal stress, which relieves itself by cracking the wood at the ends (known as “checking”).

How to Prevent It:

  • Acclimatise the Wood: Never build furniture with timber that has been stored outside in the damp or in an unheated shed. Bring it indoors and let it sit in the room for at least a week before cutting it.
  • Seal the Ends: If you are storing valuable timber, painting the end grain with latex paint or wood glue will slow down moisture loss and prevent checking.

Repairing a Split

If a board splits cleanly along the grain during assembly, it can usually be saved. Open the crack slightly, inject PVA wood glue deep into the split, and apply strong clamps across the board to force the split closed. Once dry (24 hours), the glued joint will be stronger than the surrounding wood.
