Choosing glue for wood, plastic, metal and fabric

A practical overview of matching common adhesives to common DIY materials.

The Golden Rule of Gluing

There is no such thing as a universal “super glue” that works perfectly on every material in every condition. The secret to a successful repair is matching the chemistry of the adhesive to the materials being joined and ensuring proper surface preparation.

Common DIY Adhesives

1. PVA Wood Glue (Aliphatic Resin)

  • Best for: Joining wood to wood, paper, or porous boards like MDF.
  • How it works: It requires the materials to be porous so the glue can soak in and dry.
  • Key requirement: It must be firmly clamped while it dries (usually 30 minutes to an hour for initial grab, 24 hours for full strength). Wood glue is incredibly strong; a proper joint is often stronger than the wood itself.

2. Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue)

  • Best for: Fast, small repairs on non-porous materials like hard plastics, ceramics, and some metals.
  • How it works: It cures instantly in the presence of trace amounts of moisture.
  • Limitations: It is very brittle. It lacks shear strength (resistance to side-to-side forces) and fails under impact. It is not suitable for gaps or flexible materials.

3. Epoxy Resin (Two-Part Epoxy)

  • Best for: High-strength repairs on metal, glass, ceramics, and rigid plastics. Excellent for gap-filling.
  • How it works: You mix a resin and a hardener together, which causes a chemical reaction that cures into a solid, durable plastic.
  • Variations: Available in 5-minute fast-setting varieties for quick jobs, or slower-setting versions that offer higher final strength.

4. Contact Adhesive

  • Best for: Laminates, leather, rubber, and large flat surfaces where clamping is impossible.
  • How it works: You apply it to both surfaces, wait 10-15 minutes until it is dry to the touch, and then press the parts together. It bonds instantly and aggressively upon contact.

5. Hot-Melt Glue

  • Best for: Craft projects, temporary holding, and porous fabrics or cardboard.
  • Limitations: It forms a bulky surface bond, lacks structural strength, and obviously fails in high-temperature environments (like inside a hot car).

Surface Preparation (Crucial Step)

A glue joint is only as strong as the surface it is stuck to.

  • Clean: The surface must be completely free of grease, oil, dust, and old glue. Wipe down metals and plastics with rubbing alcohol or acetone before gluing.
  • Roughen: Extremely smooth surfaces (like glass or polished metal) don’t give the adhesive anything to grip. Lightly sand the bonding areas with fine sandpaper to create a “key” for the glue.

Safety Note

Epoxy resins and cyanoacrylates can irritate the skin and give off fumes. Work in a well-ventilated area. If you superglue your fingers together, do not pull them apart forcefully; use acetone (nail polish remover) or warm soapy water to slowly soften the bond. Do not rely on adhesives alone for load-bearing overhead objects or safety-critical structural repairs.
