Clove Hitch
A quick adjustable hitch for temporarily fastening rope around a post, rail or similar object.
Good for

Avoid using it for
- Critical loads
- Slippery poles or ropes where the hitch may slide

How to tie it

- Wrap the working end around the post.
- Cross over the standing part and wrap around the post again.
- Tuck the working end under the crossing turn.
- Pull both parts to dress the hitch so the turns sit snugly together.
Common mistakes
- Using it where the load changes direction or comes on and off repeatedly.
- Leaving the turns crossed awkwardly instead of neatly dressed.
- Forgetting that it can loosen if the rope is not loaded appropriately.
Practical DIY uses
A clove hitch is handy for holding a line while setting up a temporary garden support, beginning a light lashing, or positioning a rope before adding a more secure knot.
