Choosing rope for general DIY jobs

Matching the Rope to the Task

A rope is simply a collection of fibres twisted or braided together to provide tensile strength (resistance to being pulled apart). Choosing the wrong material can result in knots slipping, ropes snapping under shock loads, or fibres rotting away in the sun.

1. Polypropylene Rope (The Cheap, Blue Rope)

This is the brightly coloured (often blue or yellow) plastic rope commonly sold in hardware stores.

  • Pros: It is very cheap, lightweight, and it floats on water.
  • Cons: It is slippery, meaning knots hold poorly. Most critically, it degrades rapidly when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. If left outdoors for a year, it will become brittle and snap easily.
  • Best for: Temporary tying, pulling light loads, or tying down tarpaulins for a short period.

2. Nylon Rope

Nylon is the strongest common synthetic fibre.

  • Pros: It is incredibly strong and has a lot of “stretch” (elasticity). This stretch allows it to absorb shock loads—like a boat bouncing on a mooring or a sudden jerk on a tow line. It resists UV damage well.
  • Cons: It loses a small amount of strength when wet and can be expensive.
  • Best for: Heavy-duty tie-downs, towing, and applications where shock absorption is needed.

3. Polyester Rope

Polyester looks and feels similar to nylon but has different properties.

  • Pros: It has very low stretch, excellent UV resistance, and retains its full strength when wet. It holds knots very well.
  • Cons: Because it doesn’t stretch, it cannot absorb shock loads well.
  • Best for: Flagpoles, tent guylines, sail rigging, and tying things down tightly where you don’t want the rope to stretch out over time.

4. Natural Fibre Rope (Sisal, Manila, Hemp)

These are traditional ropes made from plant fibres.

  • Pros: They look fantastic for decorative projects, offer excellent grip, and hold knots exceptionally well because the rough fibres lock together.
  • Cons: They are prone to rot, mildew, and shrinkage when wet. They are significantly weaker than modern synthetic ropes of the same thickness.
  • Best for: Indoor decoration, garden borders, decking handrails, and rustic craft projects.

Safety Note

Working Load Limit (WLL): Never assume a rope’s “breaking strength” is what it can safely lift. The Working Load Limit is usually only 10% to 20% of the breaking strength. Furthermore, tying a knot in a rope instantly reduces its strength by up to 50%.
