How to choose between spring clamps, bar clamps, straps and simple weights. Before choosing a method, look at the material, the environment and what would happen if the fix failed.

Practical checks

• The workpiece must be stable before tools are used.
• Clamp pads can prevent dents and shiny marks.
• Temporary holding is not the same as a permanent fixing.
• Keep the work visible and easy to inspect.
• Treat uncertain or safety-critical work as a reason to stop and seek better guidance.

Good habits

Work slowly, test on scrap or a hidden area where possible, and stop if the material starts to crack, crush, mark or move unexpectedly.

Safety note

Clamping pressure can mark or crush surfaces. Unstable workpieces are dangerous. Improvised clamps are for light-duty positioning only, and hands must stay clear when cutting, drilling or sawing.
